NFFA Commissioner Lorena “MeeMaw” Murrman announced Monday that the Corsairs were officially changing their name to the Downtown Pornhuskers.

That the defending league champions were changing their name had been an open secret since owner Mojo D revealed that his team would relocate their home games to a rooftop stadium at Nashville’s new downtown convention center. What made Monday’s announcement unusual was that it came from the league office and not from the Corsairs. Mojo D, said by staffers to be on an extended vacation, did not attend the announcement press conference.

Even more oddly, when asked by a reporter how the new name was selected, Murrman admitted that her office had received no official communication from the Corsairs on that subject. Rather, she said, the name was “extrapolated from available information.”

Because of licensing agreements with sponsors and NFFA Properties, Murrman explained, league rules clearly state that team name changes must be submitted by June 5 each year. The Corsairs failed to meet the deadline. Since news reports earlier had revealed that Pornhuskers was one of the names the team was considering — even going so far as commissioning possible logos for review — Murrman said she “made an executive decision. I knew they wanted a new name, and this was the only one they had mentioned. So since Mojo D missed the deadline and didn’t return my calls, that’s what we had to go with. He’s a nice boy, and I imagine maybe his cell phone was dead, or maybe he forgot to pay his phone bill; otherwise I’m sure he’d have called me. But rules are rules.”

Upon further questioning, Murrman revealed that “Personally, I’m not too crazy about the name. I think it reflects a dimension of this league that I usually associate with some of the other owners, not Mr. D, or my grandson when he owned a team (referring to Thurman Murrman, who owned the franchise that became the Village Green). In fact, I suggested that the new name for the Corsairs be the Nashville Nice Boys, but some of the others here said it would be overstepping my authority to impose that name on them. Pornhuskers is at least a name they were thinking about.”

Phone calls to the number listed for the Corsairs’ offices were not returned as of press time.
